ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï Alumni Spotlight: Makenzie — Building Community, Embracing Leadership, and Finding Purpose Through ºÚÁϳԹÏ

Growing up in the Evansville area made choosing ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï an easy and natural decision. Evansville has always been home, and I’ve long believed in the potential of our region. From a young age, I saw the strong sense of community, the relationships people build, and the opportunities available to those willing to invest in them. Over the years, I’ve watched Evansville continue to evolve, and today that momentum is stronger than ever. Staying here allowed me to deepen my connections, collaborate with passionate leaders, and contribute to meaningful progress in the community that shaped me. Remaining in Evansville has given me the chance to be part of something larger than myself — to help create positive, lasting change while staying rooted in a place I genuinely care about.

Unlike many people in my family, I didn’t grow up with a clear vision of what I wanted to be. My parents were teachers, my cousin is a nurse, and they all seemed to have a defined sense of purpose early on. My path was less certain, and at times that felt challenging because I didn’t have a roadmap or predetermined destination. But when I became an entrepreneur at 25, everything started to make sense. I realized why other roles had left me feeling unfulfilled. Entrepreneurship didn’t suddenly become easy — in fact, very little about it is predictable — but that’s exactly what makes it rewarding. It has taught me to embrace the unknown, take calculated risks, trust my abilities, and lean on mentors for guidance. While I’m still early in my journey as a multi‑business owner, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The freedom to create, lead, and make an impact has made every challenge worthwhile.

Choosing ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï felt like the perfect fit. The campus is beautiful, the opportunities are endless, and its connection to the Evansville region is undeniable. I saw earning my degree at ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï as a way to invest in the place I call home. The academic programs are strong and relevant, the faculty and staff are exceptional, and the university continues to grow in impressive ways. ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï offers far more than classroom learning — mentorship, internships, hands‑on experiences, and workforce opportunities all shaped my development. I’m proud to be an alumna of a university that plays such a pivotal role in our region’s future.

My advice to current ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï students is simple: why not you. It’s easy to assume successful people have something you don’t, but every leader and innovator started somewhere. Lean into your strengths, trust your talents, and pursue goals that feel ambitious. Build meaningful relationships, get involved, and don’t wait for permission to lead. If you work hard, stay curious, and believe in yourself, you can create a future that exceeds your expectations.
